Released overseas in 1995 as
Boulevard, this new version of the underground classic that deftly merged jazz and house music is now available for American fans of St. Germain to enjoy. In 2000, we were given a sample of St. Germain's work on the domestic
Tourist, but until now have been relegated to import copies of the famed
Boulevard sessions of France native Ludovic Navarre.
Widely considered to be a major influence of the worlds of jazz and soul with house (note the St. Germain influence on Tortoise and fellow countrymen Air), Navarre proves on Boulevard that his jazz-inspired electronica is as relevant now as it was when it was first released. For Americans recently infatuated with the music of Air, there is a whole catalogue of St. Germain releases just waiting to be discovered.
Navarre has included two bonus songs here, to make up for holding out on his American friends for so long. A new mix of "Alabama Blues", taken from his 1999 release From Detroit to St. Germain, and the entirely danceable "Soul Salsa Soul", should ease the hurt a bit, or at least inspire rabid fans to shell out the cash for this new version.
