Using only minimal instrumentation, the fibrous being that calls itself Corpus Callosum subjects your ears to an eerie blend of acoustic guitar, oboe, keys and haunting voices, all the while stinging your emotions with terse lyrics. While the bulk of Corpus' music revolves around the guitar, the band prides itself on producing lopsided rhythms that provide for some unusual musical twists and turns. "Death" is a melancholy number that plods along as a somber voice discusses the delicate matters surrounding the afterlife. The band's bold lyrical statements are sharply contrasted by their patented goth-folk musical backing, making this a fantastic aural gem.
Someone obviously has a chip on his shoulder, as the subsequent "I Hate You" poignantly tells its unknown target, "Here's my song, I hope it kills you / I hope they find you layin' /face down with my song playin'," leaving little question as to the vocalist's state of mind. It's cold, piercing and so engrossing that you'll find your attention fully dedicated to the corporeal ambiance Corpus Callosum creates. "Love Song to My Shadow" may be the only disappointment of these five tracks; the tortured, off-key vocals don't exude the confidence and clout exhibited by the other numbers.
