Soundclip: "Gangstarr's "Battle""

Buy me now
Predictably, the soundtrack to Curtis Hanson's 8 Mile is light on cheesy quasi-classical orchestrations and heavy on mainstream hip-hop firepower, generated in large part by the film's star, Eminem. Unless you've been living under a rock (or in some self-imposed media blackout) for the last few months, you've heard the catchy call-and-response of "Lose Control", which is featured prominently here. In addition to four new Eminem tracks, the soundtrack features the cream of the Shady Records crop: hot-shit newcomers Obie Trice and 50 Cent are front and center, guesting on Em's "Love Me" and contributing several tracks of their own ("Adrenaline Rush", "Places to Go", "Wanksta") that don't quite match their boss's spot-on flow. Elsewhere, offerings from the likes of Xzibit, Macy Gray, Jay-Z and Nas continue the parade of major-label talent. The result is a watered-down mix of big-budget tricks and studio sheen -- a sharp contrast to the gritty, unflappable character of the film. A roster comprised of up-and-coming underground talent (Alias/Latryx/DJ Abilities) would have been far more fitting.
