In what seems to be a burgeoning trend, this split release from recurrent favorites Small Brown Bike and the Casket Lottery is actually a collaborative effort as opposed to an epic spy vs. spy showdown. In reality, though, the split is more an exercise in pseudo-collaboration (tapes mailed back and forth as opposed to logging actual studio time together) than true tag-teamwork. That said, this six song EP does nothing to tarnish either group's stellar reputation amongst the post-punk pack -- and likewise, it adds nothing new and/or exciting to their respective canons. Larynxes are put to the test and guitars whittle and spit venomously throughout SBB's "Now I'm a Shadow", while the gnarled bass figure and metallisheen guitars of "Composing Myself (a lullaby)" are vintage Casket Lottery down to the very last note. But the real ray of sunshine in this otherwise standard pack is the collective's surprisingly upbeat cover of the Bowie/Queen classic "Under Pressure", which, while it does not improve upon the original, gives the song a well-executed (and somewhat welcome) thrash-and-strum overhaul.
