Soundclip: "Laminated Cat"

Buy me now
Wilco kingpin Jeff Tweedy, production auteur Jim O'Rourke and Wilco drummer/percussionist Glenn Kotche -- three-fifths of the indie rock dream team that fabricated the mythically-brilliant Yankee Hotel Foxtrot -- deliver a collection of tunes that strain the boundaries of pop-based experimental songcraft to its breaking point. While there's undoubtedly a wealth of ideas to be found here, listenability is the real wildcard; tracks such as "Laminated Cat" and the oblique "You Were Wrong" sit awkwardly between the hacked-MIDI grandeur of YHF and O'Rourke's PowerBook-damaged work with fellow electro travelers Peter Rehberg and Christian Fennesz -- a suitably avant garde resonance that submerges Tweedy's pop-smarts and cryptically beautiful lyrics beneath layer after layer of clicks, pops, blurts, blips and slurps. Though nooks and crannies of comfort (Tweedy's familiar drawl/Kotche's mesmerizing percussion/O'Rourke's skill with a twisted melody line) crop up throughout the album, Loose Fur is a difficult record to connect with. In the end, you'll feel as though you've dutifully trudged through the band's sonic murk, only to arrive back at the starting point of a journey they're not quite sure they've completed and you're not certain you should have taken.
