Aside from the occasional label roster sampler, Deep Elm has always gone a step beyond with their compilations.
Unreleased 2 is another offering of exclusive songs from their signature artists, and while these B-sides are a little pale when compared to the bands' larger bodies of work, the low price tag compensates for this adjustment in quality.
You've got plenty of stock artists here -- Camber, Benton Falls, Racer Car Riot, David Singer -- whose contributions don't differ much from their usual output. Deep Elm is still ravaging the closet of the long-defunct Walt Mink, and this time they've stumbled upon "Downright Presidential", one of the more cohesive songs from a quirky act that you'll either love or hate. Cross My Heart and The Appleseed Cast offer the comp's biggest disappointments: the former's "Complications" is a sub-two minute number that lacks the cathartic release they were adored for, and the Cast song seems to have been culled from their mundane SDRE-worshipping days. Slowride is a more pleasant surprise, escaping the general mediocrity of their other material with "This Train", a no frills slice of angsty pop reminiscent of Knapsack.
I'll stick with the caveat that accompanies most compilations: completists take note; everyone else, stick to the full lengths.
